THE ROLE
Positioned at the Masvingo Field Office, this role entails providing efficient and secure transportation for authorized personnel and/or goods.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):
With delegated authority, the Driver for any mode of transport will be accountable for the following tasks:
1. Provide safe transportation for authorized personnel, including translating basic conversations from/to the local language, and/or delivering various items or goods following authorized routes and adhering to UN safety and security protocols to guarantee effective services.
2. Greet officials and visitors at the airport or other entry points, delivering basic assistance with visa and customs processes to ensure smooth and secure entry and arrival at authorized destinations.
3. Accurately maintain vehicle log books and report daily to the supervisor regarding the mechanical status to ensure efficient vehicle utilization and fuel consumption, promoting precise accounting and cost-efficiency.
4. Ensure that the assigned vehicle is kept clean and well-maintained, including all necessary equipment, timely maintenance, and ensuring the vehicle is fully stocked with required travel authorizations and supplies, while reporting any mechanical issues to the supervisor to ensure safe and effective services.
5. Adhere to established rules and regulations for field deliveries, and report immediately to the supervisor regarding any apparent issues, to seek guidance and facilitate informed decisions for the way forward.
6. Negotiate, liaise, and coordinate with local authorities to facilitate vehicle movements in designated areas.
7. In addition to driving responsibilities, perform basic office-related tasks such as filing, photocopying, and maintaining stores when necessary, including the delivery and collection of various items, mailing services, and payment of office invoices for telecommunication and other bills to provide administrative support to clients.
Results Expected: Driving tasks are performed safely, efficiently, and punctually; sound judgment is applied in route planning. The team is supported in collaborating with colleagues and WFP’s partners in the field toward shared objectives. A professional and courteous relationship is maintained with other WFP employees and field partners. Critical Success Factors include being trustworthy, possessing a high sense of responsibility, alertness; maintaining physical fitness while on duty, emotional stability, and professionalism. Knowledge of local areas and current road conditions is essential. The ability to interact patiently, respectfully, and tactfully with individuals from various national and cultural backgrounds is crucial. The ability to comprehend specific vehicle operating manuals to ensure safe and appropriate vehicle operations is also necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
Completion of high school education along with formal driver training and possession of a valid driver’s license.
A Defensive Driver's license is highly preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of two years of driving experience, ideally within an international organization, embassy, or UN system, demonstrating a proven record of safe driving.
Proficient in operating various types of vehicles, including vans, trucks, and other motorized vehicles.
Knowledge and Skills:
Familiarity with traffic laws and regulations, chauffeur etiquette, local road conditions, and security matters.
Proficient in using radio, email, telephone, and other communication applications.
Skilled in driving multiple vehicle types, including vans and other motorized vehicles, as well as having the ability to perform minor vehicle repairs.
Experience with software applications, such as MS Word and/or MS Excel.
Knowledge of first aid practices.
Language: Proficient in both spoken and written communication in the UN language used at the duty station, along with the local language, if different.
